Fruit People Can Taste

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)

This week we've exposed the leaves, confronted busyness, found the root, and surrendered to the pruning.

Now let's talk about the fruit itself.

Notice two things about Paul's list.

First, it's "the fruit of the Spirit." Singular. Not nine options where you pick your favorites. It's one harvest, the character of Jesus growing in you by His Spirit.

You don't get to say, "I'm loving, I'm just not a patient person." The Spirit grows all of it.

Second, every one of these shows up around people.

You can't practice longsuffering alone in a room. Kindness needs someone to be kind to. Gentleness needs someone to be gentle with.

Here's the key. Fruit is never for the tree.

An apple tree doesn't eat its own apples. Fruit exists to feed someone else.

So the real test of your spiritual life isn't how you feel in worship. It's what the people around you get to taste.

What does your spouse taste when you walk in after a long day?

What do your kids taste when they spill the milk?

What does the server taste when your order comes out wrong?

What does your coworker taste when they get credit for your idea?

That's where fruit is proven. Not just in the sanctuary. In the kitchen, the car, the break room, and the comment section.

Now remember Day 3. You can't force fruit. But you can cooperate with the Spirit.

Paul says a few verses later, "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."

Walking is practical. One step at a time.

So today, pick one fruit. Just one.

Choose the one that's hardest to find in you right now. Then name the place it gets tested most.

Patience in traffic. Gentleness with a teenager. Self-control with your phone. Kindness with the relative who gets under your skin.

Before you walk into that moment, pray, "Holy Spirit, grow this in me right here."

Then choose it, even when you don't feel it.

You'll find that fruit often grows in the choosing.

The goal isn't to look fruitful. It's to be someone people leave more nourished than when they came.

Today's Challenge

Write down the one fruit you're asking God to grow and the one place it gets tested most. Right before that moment today, pray, "Holy Spirit, grow this in me right here." Then do one specific thing that shows it, like a gentle answer, a patient pause, a kind text, or putting your phone in another room. Tonight, write down what happened.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, I can't manufacture Your fruit, but I can walk with You. Grow love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in me, starting with the one I need most today. Let the people around me taste Jesus when they're with me, beginning at home. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

  1. Which fruit of the Spirit is hardest to find in my life right now?
  2. What do the people closest to me actually taste when they're around me?
  3. Where is that fruit tested most often in my week?
