The Pruning You Keep Resisting

“Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

John 15:2 (NKJV)

Yesterday we learned that fruit comes from connection, not effort.

But Jesus said something in the same breath that most of us skip.

"Every branch that bears fruit He prunes."

Read that slowly. Pruning isn't for the dead branches. It's for the fruitful ones.

If you're bearing some fruit, God isn't finished with you. He wants more.

Jesus calls His Father the vinedresser. A vinedresser doesn't cut because he's angry at the vine. He cuts because he knows what the vine could become.

Left alone, a vine grows wild. Long branches. Thick leaves. Energy going everywhere except into fruit.

So the vinedresser cuts. Sometimes he cuts healthy growth.

That's the part we resist.

We understand God removing sin. We struggle when He removes something good.

A position. A friendship. A comfort. A plan. A role you loved.

It feels like loss. Sometimes it is.

But pruning is not punishment. It's preparation.

God isn't cutting you back to make you smaller. He's cutting you back to make you fruitful.

When the vinedresser cuts away what's draining the vine, the life that was scattered across a hundred branches gets focused into fruit.

Pruning can look like a door closing that you prayed would stay open. A season of being unseen. Correction you didn't want. Conviction about a habit you thought was harmless. A yes to God that requires a no to something you enjoy.

And here's how we resist.

We grab the branch back. We stay busy to avoid the ache. We blame people instead of asking what God is doing. We pray harder for the pain to stop than for the fruit to come.

Hebrews says, "Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."

Painful now. Fruitful afterward.

Let me be pastoral. Not every hard thing is God pruning you. Some pain comes from a broken world or someone else's sin.

But God wastes none of it.

And the hands holding the shears are the same hands that were pierced for you.

So count the cost. What is He cutting that you keep reaching for?

Surrender isn't pretending it doesn't hurt. It's saying, "I trust the One holding the shears."

Today's Challenge

Name one thing you sense God is pruning: a habit, a commitment, a comfort, or a role. Write it down. Then take one concrete step to stop resisting within 24 hours. Step down, delete it, end it, or confess it. Tell one trusted person what you did.

Prayer

Father, You are the Vinedresser, and I am not. I confess I've fought Your pruning because it hurts. I don't understand every cut, but I trust Your hands. Take what needs to go, even the good things that have crowded out the best. I want more fruit, not just more growth. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

  1. What good thing might God be pruning from my life right now?
  2. Where am I grabbing back what He's trying to cut?
  3. Do I trust the Vinedresser's heart when I don't understand His cuts?
