Cut Off From the Vine

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

John 15:4-5 (NKJV)

Over the last two days we've named the leaves. Knowledge without fruit. Busyness without fruit.

Today we go to the root.

Why do so many sincere Christians produce so little?

Jesus answers the night before the cross. "I am the vine, you are the branches."

Think about what a branch does. It doesn't strain. It doesn't grit its teeth and squeeze out grapes.

It stays connected. The life of the vine flows through it, and fruit shows up.

Fruit isn't the branch's achievement. It's the vine's life showing up at the end of the branch.

That's why Jesus says, "without Me you can do nothing."

Not a little. Nothing.

Now, most of us would never say we're cut off from Jesus. We believe. We pray. We'd be offended at the suggestion.

But here's the honest question. Are you living from Him, or just near Him?

A cut branch can lie right next to the vine and still dry up.

Here are four things that choke the flow.

Self-reliance. You pray when you're stuck, but most days you run on talent, personality, and caffeine. God is your backup, not your source.

Hidden sin. There's a room in your heart with the door shut. You still read and pray, but He isn't allowed in there.

Secondhand faith. You live off sermons, podcasts, and other people's walk with God. You know what God said to them. You rarely hear Him for yourself.

Performance. You try to produce fruit so people will see it. That's just leaves, better arranged.

The word abide means to remain. To stay. To make your home.

It isn't visiting Jesus once a week. It's living in Him all week.

Here's the good news. You don't have to manufacture anything today.

Fruit is not your job. Connection is.

And look at the second half of the verse. "Abide in Me, and I in you."

Jesus isn't only asking you to stay close. He's promising to live in you.

If you belong to Him, His life is already there. The question is what's blocking it.

Stop trying harder. Start staying closer.

Today's Challenge

Read John 15:1-11 out loud and circle every time Jesus says "abide." Then pick one ordinary stretch of today, like your commute, lunch, or folding laundry, and spend it talking with Him. Before one real decision today, stop and ask, "Jesus, what do You want here?" Tonight, write down what happened.

Prayer

Jesus, You are the vine, and I am a branch. Forgive me for running on my own strength and calling it faith. Show me what has been blocking Your life in me, and give me courage to open every door. I don't want to live near You. I want to live from You. Teach me to abide. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

  1. Am I living from Jesus, or just near Him?
  2. Which one chokes the flow most in me: self-reliance, hidden sin, secondhand faith, or performance?
  3. Is there a room in my heart I haven't let Him into?
