Submit to the File

“Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

Hebrews 12:11 (NKJV)

Yesterday we looked underneath the edges. Pride. Old hurt. Fear of being wrong. The need to win.

Naming the root matters. But naming isn't the same as letting God deal with it.

Today we put ourselves in His hands.

A carpenter has a tool for rough edges. It's called a file. It doesn't split the wood. It removes a little at a time, stroke after stroke, until what was rough is smooth.

It's slow. It's uncomfortable. It works.

Hebrews says, "Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful."

Nobody enjoys the file. Scripture doesn't pretend we do.

But God uses it, because "whom the LORD loves He chastens."

Discipline isn't proof God is angry with you. It's proof you're His.

So what does God's file look like? Usually one of three things.

Correction. The friend who tells you the truth. The spouse who says, "You were harsh." The boss who points out your blind spot.

Most of us don't reject correction. We just explain it away.

Hard people. The coworker who drives you crazy. The relative who pushes every button. You keep asking God to remove them. Maybe He's using them to remove something in you.

Humbling seasons. You got passed over. You were wrong in public. Something you built fell apart.

Those seasons feel like loss. Sometimes they're the file.

Here's the cost. Submitting to the file means you stop defending yourself every time God starts working on you.

It means saying, "You might be right," and meaning it.

Proverbs puts it bluntly. "He who hates correction is stupid."

That's not me. That's the Bible.

But notice the promise. "Afterward." Afterward it yields peace. Afterward it yields righteousness.

The pain is now. The fruit is later.

And notice who gets the fruit. "Those who have been trained by it." Not everyone who goes through it. Those who let it train them.

You can go through the file and come out harder. Or you can submit to it and come out shaped.

Jesus said, "Learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart."

The hand holding the file is gentle. He knows exactly how much you can take.

Today's Challenge

Write down one piece of correction from the past year that you pushed back on. Go back to the person who gave it and say, "I've been thinking about what you told me, and I think God was in it. Thank you." Then pray for the hardest person in your life by name, and ask God what He wants to change in you through them.

Prayer

Father, I don't like the file. I'd rather defend myself than be corrected. But I want to be shaped more than I want to be comfortable. I submit to Your hand. Use correction, hard people, and humbling seasons to make me more like Jesus. Train me, and let me taste the fruit afterward. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

  1. What correction have I been explaining away instead of receiving?
  2. Who is the hard person God might be using to shape me?
  3. Am I fighting the file, or letting it train me?
