Yesterday we found the root. Many of us didn't quit Jesus. We left our first love one routine at a time.
Today we stop diagnosing and start surrendering.
Hosea spoke to a nation that had grown hard toward God. And he used a farming picture.
"Break up your fallow ground."
Fallow ground is a field that's been left alone too long. No plowing. No planting. Over time, the soil packs down and crusts over.
Rain falls on it and runs right off. Seed lands on it and just sits there.
The problem isn't the rain. It's the ground.
That's a numb heart. You can sit under great preaching, sing great songs, and read great verses, and it all runs off.
So God says, break it up.
Here's the honest part. Plowing hurts.
A plow cuts. It turns things over. It exposes what's been buried. Nobody plows a field gently.
Breaking up hard ground will cost you something.
It might cost you the habit that's been numbing you. The late-night scrolling. The show you know you shouldn't be watching. The constant noise you use so you never have to be still.
Some of us aren't numb because God went quiet. We're numb because we keep drowning Him out.
It might cost you your pride. Admitting you're not as close to God as people think.
It might cost you the sin you renamed on Day 2.
Jesus told a parable about a sower. Seed fell on the path, on rocky ground, among thorns, and on good soil. Same seed. Same sower. Different ground.
The question isn't whether God is speaking. It's what kind of ground His word is landing on.
Notice Hosea's timing. "For it is time to seek the LORD."
Not someday. Now.
And notice the promise. "Till He comes and rains righteousness on you."
You break up the ground. God sends the rain.
You can't make yourself feel again. But you can stop hardening yourself and give Him soil to work with.
After his worst failure, David prayed, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart."
A broken heart isn't the end. It's plowed ground.
And plowed ground is where harvest begins.
Today's Challenge
Write down the one thing that most numbs you to God. Then take a real step to break it up today: delete the app, cancel the subscription, end the conversation, or turn off the noise for 24 hours. In the space it leaves, spend fifteen minutes in silence and Scripture, starting with Psalm 51.
Prayer
Lord, my heart has grown hard, and Your Word has been running off me. I don't want to protect what numbs me anymore. Plow me up. Break what needs breaking. I give You the habit, the noise, and the sin I've been holding onto. I'll break up the ground. Please send the rain. In Jesus' name, amen.
Reflection
- What has been running off me instead of sinking in?
- What habit, noise, or sin is keeping my heart hard?
- Am I willing to let God plow, even if it costs me something?
