Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · FORMED · Day 2 — Spiritually Numb

When Sin Stops Bothering You

“having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”

Ephesians 4:18-19 (NKJV)

Yesterday we admitted something. A lot of us aren't cold. We're comfortable.

Today we go one layer deeper. Numbness doesn't only change how we feel about God. It changes how we feel about sin.

Paul describes people "being past feeling."

The word means to stop feeling pain. To grow callused.

Doctors who worked with leprosy patients discovered something surprising. The disease didn't destroy fingers and toes directly. It destroyed the nerves. Patients stopped feeling pain, so they'd grab a hot pan or walk on a broken foot and never know it.

The damage came from what they couldn't feel.

Pain is a gift. It tells you something is wrong.

Conviction is the soul's version of pain.

Remember the first time you did that thing? Your heart pounded. You couldn't sleep.

The second time, it bothered you less. By the tenth time, you barely noticed.

The sin didn't get smaller. Your heart got harder.

Hebrews warns, "lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin."

Sin rarely announces itself. It renames itself.

Gossip becomes "sharing a concern." Lust becomes "just looking." Bitterness becomes "being honest." Greed becomes "being responsible."

And slowly, things that used to break your heart start making you laugh. You watch it. You scroll it. You say it. You don't even blink.

Notice where Paul says it starts. Not with behavior. With "the blindness of their heart" and being "alienated from the life of God."

Distance from God always comes before deadness toward sin.

Paul was describing people outside of Christ. If you belong to Jesus, you've been made new. But believers can still let their hearts callus in the places they keep from Him.

So here's the uncomfortable question.

What used to bother you that doesn't anymore?

Don't rush past that.

Here's the hope. If this stings a little, that's good news. The Holy Spirit is still speaking.

God promised through Ezekiel, "I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."

A heart of flesh can feel. It can be grieved. It can be moved.

And if you're afraid you've gone too far, hear this. Hard hearts don't worry about being hard.

The fact that you care is proof God isn't finished.

Today's Challenge

Draw two columns on a piece of paper. Label one "What used to bother me" and the other "What I call it now." Fill in at least two honest lines. Then pray Psalm 139:23-24 out loud and ask God to show you what you've stopped feeling. Whatever He brings up, confess it by its real name, not "my struggles."

Prayer

Father, I don't want to be past feeling. Forgive me for the sins I've renamed and the nudges I've ignored. Thank You that conviction isn't rejection. It's Your love refusing to let me drift. Take out my heart of stone and give me a heart that feels what You feel. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

  1. What used to bother me that doesn't anymore?
  2. What sins have I renamed so they sound smaller?
  3. Where have I been ignoring the Holy Spirit's nudge?
