This week we're going to talk about something most of us never admit out loud.
You haven't walked away from God. You still believe. You'd still check the box marked Christian.
But somewhere along the way, you stopped feeling it.
Worship that used to wreck you now just fills time. Verses that used to set you on fire feel like wallpaper. You pray, but mostly out of habit.
Here's the big idea for this series. The danger isn't that you stopped believing. It's that you stopped feeling the weight of what you believe.
Jesus spoke to a church like that. Laodicea.
They weren't persecuted. They weren't heretics. They were comfortable.
Laodicea had a water problem. Nearby Hierapolis had hot springs that healed. Colossae had cold, fresh water that refreshed. Laodicea piped its water in from miles away, and by the time it arrived, it was lukewarm.
Hot water heals. Cold water refreshes. Lukewarm water just makes you gag.
That's the picture Jesus uses.
But notice why they were lukewarm. "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing.'"
Lukewarm doesn't come from hardship. It comes from comfort.
Comfort rarely makes us reject God. It just makes us stop needing Him.
And the scariest phrase is this one. They "do not know."
Lukewarm people don't feel lukewarm. They feel fine.
That's what numbness does. It doesn't hurt. That's exactly the problem.
Now let me be fair. Feelings rise and fall. Some seasons are dry, and God is faithful in them. I'm not asking you to chase goosebumps.
But there's a difference between a dry season and a cold heart.
A dry season still aches for God. A numb heart doesn't notice He's missing.
Here's the good news. Jesus didn't say this to shame them. A few verses later He says, "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten." Then, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock."
He was talking to church people. And He was still knocking.
If you feel a little uncomfortable right now, that's not condemnation.
That's feeling coming back.
Today's Challenge
Read Revelation 3:14-22 out loud. Then grab a card and write, "On a scale of 1 to 10, my heart toward God right now is a ___," plus one sentence explaining why. Be honest, not spiritual. Keep that card. You'll need it on Day 6.
Prayer
Jesus, I don't want to be lukewarm. Forgive me for getting comfortable and calling it peace. I've let a full life make You feel optional. Thank You for loving me enough to tell me the truth. I hear You knocking, and I'm opening the door. In Jesus' name, amen.
Reflection
- If I'm honest, am I hot, cold, or comfortably in between?
- Where has comfort made God feel optional in my life?
- When was the last time something about Jesus actually moved me?
