Most of us would love God to give us the whole plan. Where are we going? How long will it take? What will happen when we get there? How much will it cost?
And, most importantly... How is this going to turn out? Then we’ll obey.
But that isn’t usually how faith works. When God called Abram, He didn't hand him a map. He simply said: Go. The destination would come later.
We Want Details - God Wants Trust
Think about what God asked Abram to leave. His country. His extended family. His father’s household. His familiarity. His security. Everything he knew.
And where was he going? God essentially said: “I’ll show you.”
That would drive some of us crazy. We want God to explain step 7 before we’ll take step 1. But sometimes God deliberately withholds details because knowing everything wouldn’t require faith.
If Abram had received the entire itinerary, calculated the distance, researched the destination, and understood every challenge ahead, he could have trusted the plan. Instead, God asked him to trust the Planner. There is a huge difference.
Partial Instructions Still Require Full Obedience
Here’s where we often get stuck. God gives us enough direction to obey, but not enough information to feel comfortable. So we wait.
“Lord, give me confirmation.” “Show me another sign.” “Open another door.” “Tell me how this will work.”
Sometimes those prayers are legitimate. But sometimes they’re just spiritual-sounding ways of saying: “God, I’m not moving until You eliminate the risk.”
That isn’t faith. At some point, confirmation can become procrastination.
If God has clearly spoken through His Word and the leading is consistent with His character, there comes a moment when we have to stop asking Him to explain and start obeying what He has already revealed.
Genesis 12:4 contains four powerful words: “So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him...”
Genesis 12:4 KJV
God spoke. Abram moved.
God Often Gives Headlights - Not Floodlights
Think about driving down a dark highway. Your headlights don't illuminate the next fifty miles. They show you enough road to keep moving. And as you move forward, more road becomes visible. That’s often how God leads.
We want floodlights. God gives headlights. We want the whole journey. God gives the next step. We want certainty. God asks for trust.
You don't need to see the entire road to obey the One who does. That’s one of the hardest lessons of discipleship.
What Are You Waiting For?
Maybe you already know your next step. Make the phone call. Have the conversation. Apply. Go. Stay. Give. Forgive. Serve. Start. Stop.
You’ve been asking God for more information when He may be waiting for movement.
Be careful here. Faith isn’t recklessness, and not every impulse is God’s voice. We test what we believe God is saying against Scripture and seek godly wisdom when needed. But once God has made something clear, fear doesn't get veto power over obedience.
Sometimes understanding comes after obedience. Abram discovered the destination because he started walking.
Today's Challenge
Ask yourself one question: “What has God already shown me to do that I keep postponing because I don’t know what happens next?”
Write down your answer. Then identify one concrete step you can take today. Not someday. Today.
Make the call. Send the message. Begin the conversation. Take the step.
You don’t need the entire map. You just need enough faith for the next step.
5 Around
Someone around you may be standing still because they’re waiting to understand everything before taking the next step. Maybe God will use your simple act of sharing to give someone the courage to start walking.
Prayer
Father, I confess that I often want explanations before obedience. I want certainty before surrender. Teach me to trust You when I cannot see what comes next. Give me wisdom to recognize Your voice and courage to obey what You have made clear. When fear demands the whole map, remind me that You already know the road ahead. Today I choose to trust the One leading me. Form in me a faith that moves when You speak. In Jesus’ name, amen.
