Friday, September 25, 2026 · FORMED · Day 6 — Stop Lying to Yourself

Step Into the Light

“But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

John 3:21 (NKJV)

“But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

For five days, we’ve asked God to show us where we’ve been less than honest with ourselves.

We’ve looked at the stories we tell ourselves, the blame we place on others, the softer names we give our sin, the motives beneath our good actions, and the difference between looking spiritual and becoming mature.

Now comes the question that matters most.

What will we do with what God has shown us?

It’s possible to recognize a lie and keep living by it. We can agree that a devotional was convicting, tell someone how much it spoke to us, and then return to the same pattern tomorrow.

Recognition matters. But recognition alone doesn’t change us.

Jesus said that the person who does the truth comes to the light. Notice that He didn’t say the person who talks about truth or admires truth. He said the person who does it.

Coming into the light can feel frightening because it means we stop managing appearances.

We say, “I was wrong,” without adding a long explanation that shifts the blame.

We say, “I haven’t forgiven,” instead of pretending our distance is simply wisdom.

We say, “I want people to notice me,” instead of dressing our desire for approval in spiritual language.

We say, “I know what God has asked me to do, and I’ve been putting it off.”

That kind of honesty leaves us exposed. But the light we step into belongs to Jesus. He doesn’t invite us there to make a spectacle of our failure. He invites us there because we cannot follow Him while clinging to what we’re hiding.

First John 1:9 tells us that when we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us.

Confession is more than admitting we got caught. It’s agreeing with God about what’s true. Repentance takes the next step. It turns from the lie and begins walking in a new direction.

Sometimes that next step is an apology with no excuses.

Sometimes it’s ending a secret habit and asking someone trustworthy to help us remain accountable.

Sometimes it’s making restitution.

Sometimes it’s accepting correction instead of defending our image.

And sometimes it’s quietly obeying the instruction God has already made clear.

Don’t confuse repentance with a promise that you’ll never struggle again. A person can sincerely turn toward God and still need time, support, and repeated obedience as new habits are formed. The question is whether you’re bringing that struggle into the light or building another hiding place around it.

That is the heart of FORMED.

We haven’t spent this week examining ourselves so we can become experts at feeling guilty. We’ve done it because Christ is forming something real within us. He isn’t asking us to polish the outside of the vessel while leaving the inside untouched.

He wants our honesty. He wants our surrender. He wants our obedience.

You don’t need to leave this series with a dramatic speech about everything you’ll change. Begin with the truth God has placed before you, and take one faithful step today.

Today's Challenge

Write one honest sentence about what God has shown you this week. Don’t soften it or explain it away.

Then write one specific step of obedience you can take within the next twenty four hours. Pray over it, and follow through. If you need help, invite a mature and trustworthy believer to walk with you.

5 Around

Who are five people around you who might benefit from this journey? Share today’s devotional with them, and invite them to read the full six day series. Don’t send it as a message about what’s wrong with them. Share it as an invitation to join you in allowing God to form what’s true and lasting within us.

Prayer

Father, thank You for loving me enough to show me the truth. Forgive me for the ways I’ve hidden, blamed, performed, and made excuses. I bring what You’ve revealed into Your light today.

Give me courage to confess what needs to be confessed and change what needs to be changed. Where I’ve hurt someone, help me take responsibility. Where I’ve developed a pattern I can’t overcome alone, give me humility to seek help.

Keep me from mistaking conviction for transformation. Teach me to respond to Your Word with obedience. As I walk in Your grace and truth, form the character of Christ in me.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflection

  1. What truth has the Holy Spirit brought to my attention during this series?
  2. Have I responded with obedience, or have I only agreed that the message was true?
  3. Is there someone I need to speak with, an action I need to stop, or a step I need to begin?
